BELONGING

In the series “Belonging,” I incorporate pages of phone books from places where I have lived. The paper collages and cut outs vary in dimension. The imagery I use reflects my numerous relocations from one culture to another. They take the form of mosaics (Italy), lace pattern-work (Switzerland), dots (Singapore), indigenous imagery (Australia), and traditional quilt patterns (United States), amongst others. The phone books represent a tool for familiarizing oneself with the immediate community.

While the phonebooks are obviously specific to a given urban setting, there are also similar across nations and continents and provide a cohesive conceptual underpinning for this series. The work then becomes a record of“place” as well as a personal history within a collective context.

This series has been ongoing from 2009 to 2020.

Exhibited in numerous group shows and solo show:

2011 Belonging, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Summit, NJ

2014 Ici et Là, Dubner Moderne Gallery, Lausanne, Switzerland
