ALPHABET

Having lived in many countries where different languages are used, I have often struggled with understanding and being understood. I decided to concentrate on the common element between these languages: the Roman alphabet. 

Four pieces are part of "Alphabet": "My Alphabet", "Odds and Ends", "In Transition" and "Sometimes I dream in French, sometimes in English".

MY ALPHABET

In “My Alphabet,” I took one page of the phone book for each letter of the alphabet. I cut out everything on each page except spaces where the chosen letter appeared. These 26 pages become a universal language, open to interpretation.

ODDS AND ENDS

"Odds and Ends" is an installation piece. Each bag contains the cutouts from "My Alphabet"

SOMETIMES I DREAM IN FRENCH, SOMETIMES IN ENGLISH

“Sometimes I dream in French, sometimes in English” is a grouping of 26 pages of one phonebook, one page for each letter of the alphabet. On each page, all letters and numbers, except the chosen letter for that page, are covered with black ink. The final piece resembles a night sky, where each letter of our alphabet is a star.

IN TRANSITION

In the concertina leaflet “In Transition,” the 26 letters of the alphabet are cut from two different phonebooks. The differences between the two typefaces makes the alphabet readable.
