QUILT
The painted “Quilts” I make take the form of cultural references specific to the USA and its quilting tradition. In repurposing leftover fabric to create quilts, women reassemble fragments of memory into a practical object that manifests not only their personal artistic vision within their communities but also their family histories. This echoes my interest in how stories sharing and personal history fit within the larger context of life.
In “Quilts” I incorporate pages of phone books from places where I live. I deconstruct them. The torn pages are painted using ink, acrylic, or gouache. I often apply several layers of paint to a page, but I always aim to maintain transparency in order to retain a trace of the writing on each page.
